Chemeketa’s Public Safety officers were instrumental in detaining two suspected thieves on the campus on the morning of Jan. 22.
Deputies from the Marion County Sheriff Department joined Chemeketa officers in the green parking and on Cooley Drive.
According to Bill Kohlmeyer, the college’s Public Safety director, the activity began at 10 a.m. when Chemeketa Officer David Yost saw two individuals heading into the Book Store.
Yost recognized both individuals as suspects in a book theft from the previous week. He also knew that both individuals had outstanding arrest warrants, which prompted him to immediately contact the Sheriff Department.
The two suspects, neither of whom are students, split up and tried to leave campus separately “but were contacted by our officers and detained momentarily until deputies arrived,” Kohlmeyer said.
There were no injuries.
Kohlmeyer said that in addition to being arrested on the outstanding warrants, both of the suspects were trespassed from campus.
“Our department and the Sheriff’s Department are following up on the theft investigation,” he said.
