Nineteen Chemeketa art students received awards on May 13 during a presentation in the Gretchen Schuette Art Gallery in Bldg. 3.
The show, which is juried by artists from Polk, Marion and Yamhill counties, offers all students who have taken an art class within the past two years the chance to display their current work and to win a variety of prizes and purchase awards.
Laura Mack, an art instructor, said, “The award ceremony is a great way to show our appreciation to the students who work so hard. It is also important because eight works of art are purchased.”
Chemeketa’s president and vice president each purchase a work of art that often hangs in their office.
“Not all of the students put their work for sale,” Mack said. “I wish that the students would save their work for the art shows because can be entered two years after it was created. Each student can submit 2 pieces.”
The student show is one of the highlights of the year at the gallery.
“It is a good show for a lot of student artists to learn how to present and price their pieces,” Mack said. “The experience of the process of entering a show is a common way to build a resume by participating in shows.”
The student show is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday through June 5 in Bldg. 3-122.
