Mourners hold prayer vigil at Oregon’s capitol building in response to killing of George Floyd

On Friday, mourners gathered at Oregon’s capitol building for a prayer vigil concerning the death of George Floyd. Floyd, an African-American man, died in custody when Derek Chauvin, a white police officer, knelt on his neck for over 8 minutes. Floyd’s death came on the heels of the killing of Ahmaud Arbery who was killed by white men while jogging in Satilla Shores, GA. Unlike the vigil in Salem, Floyd’s killing sparked riots in Minneapolis, Los Angeles and other cities across the U.S. In a tweet on Thursday, President Donald Trump referred the rioters as “thugs” vowing to use the military to “take control” saying, “When the looting starts, the shooting starts.”
